Team Pilipinas: Proud Pinoys in Beirut
Date : Aug 10, 2010
Labor-related problems continue to challenge over 40,000 Filipino migrant workers in Beirut, Lebanon. However, Filipinos still find their way to the foreign land, in search for greener pastures. The Philippine Embassy is always ready to assist, but facilitating support is a struggle as the deployment ban for OFWs remains imposed in the country.
Aside from being naturally resilient, Pinoys are also endowed with a formidable spirit that keeps them hopeful and optimistic as they work hard for a better life for loved ones back home. This spirit soared when “Smart Gilas Pilipinas”, the Philippine men’s basketball team, participated in the third FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup last August 7-15, 2010.
Giving the games their all, the nationals raised the Filipinos’ pride and dignity by finishing fourth in the tournament, where ten countries from the Middle East and South East Asia competed. For the hundreds of Filipinos who came to cheer on the national team, the games provided not only sheer entertainment but also a good reason to feel proud to be Pinoy.
Learn more about the joys and tribulations of Filipino migrant workers in Lebanon and the wholistic training of the Philippine national basketball team in GMA Pinoy TV’s documentary, “Team Pilipinas” on September 3 (Middle East and Europe) and September 5 (Asia Pacific and North America).
