RP Smart Gilas National Team Dribbles its Way to Quarterfinals of Dubai Tourney!

Facing much taller foes and powerhouse teams on the hard court, the GMA Pinoy TV-sponsored-RP Smart Gilas National Team powered its way to a guaranteed slot in the quarterfinals of the 21st Dubai International Basketball Tournament. The Philippine team showed its grit and heart by beating Syria (90-76) on January 14, Lebanon (77-71) on Jan. 15, and Jordan (85-82) on Jan. 17. This was hot in the heels of RP Smart Gilas’ game 1 triumph (46-38) against the towering Qatar team in front of a jam-packed Al Gharafa Sports Stadium in Doha, Qatar. This marked the first time that a Pinoy team was able to beat the fearsome Qatar team on its home court. The Dubai Tournament is part of this year’s tough grind for the RP Smart Gilas National Team as it makes its way to the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, and in the long run, the Olympic-qualifying FIBA Asia Championships in 2011. GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Network’s flagship international channel, sponsors the RP Smart Gilas National Team by providing publicity to rally support to Smart Gilas’ games and giving financial support. It will soon air a one-hour TV special of the Middle East tour.
