Contrabida Clash: Marian Rivera talks about Darna's Contrabidas and what it's like to wear the famous costume
Date : Jan 14, 2010
Marian Rivera is one lucky girl.
Not only is she one of the hottest female stars in the country, she also plays Darna, one of the most exciting super heroes on TV. But what excites Marian more than her role are the people she gets to act with.
"Darna has a lot of contrabidas that aren't in the original series," Marian says, "Like the manananggal (played by Rochelle Pangilinan), the demonita (played by Jackie Rice) and for course, Elektra (played by Regine Velasquez)."
It isn't often that a star like Regine guests in a fantaserye, so when Marian found out that Asia's Songbird had agreed to play Elektra, a queen from another planet, she personally went up to Regine to say thank you. "I went up to her during SOP," Marian says, "It's an honor to have her on the show. I've always said that Darna isn't just about Darna, but about the characters around her as well. The show wouldn't be great without them."
Playing Darna isn't all fun and games. "The most challenging part is when I change into Darna. I have to wear the costume and do fight scenes in front of a lot of people," Marian says, "Playing Narda is also challenging since she's handicapped, and I really put my weight on the crutches. But playing Darna, wearing that costume carries a lot of responsibilities. That's the hard part."
But the challenges are tempered with good times, especially since director Dom Zapata likes to keep things light. "We have a lot of bonding time during the set," Marian says, "When we're acting, it's all light, no pressure, everyone's always laughing. Direk Dom always says that it's hard enough doing Darna, we shouldn't make t harder on ourselves."
Aside from Darna and Show Me Da Manny (which has been extended), Marian is set to do take on other, more dramatic, roles this 2010. When asked which kind of role she liked best - action, comedy or drama - Marian answered, "I like that my roles change. Darna is action, Show Me Da Manny is comedy and so this time, I'm returning to drama. I don't have a dream role because I believe that whatever character I get is a blessing. For example, I never expected to play Darna, and it is a dream role."
When asked which of the villains she thinks Darna will have the hardest time defeating, Marian smiled and said, "Of course, it's still Valentina."
